Black Water Week 2026: The Stories, The Discoveries, The Transformations

It's been only weeks since Black Water Week 2026 ended, and we still can't stop talking about it!

Our divers came to Cozumel as divers. They left as explorers.

In this recap, we're sharing what happened during those eight transformative days—the creatures discovered, the joy witnessed, and the magic that happened when our divers descended into the unknown with Mike Bartick, one of the world's foremost authorities on blackwater photography.

WHAT HAPPENED UNDER THE STARS

Six nights of 2-tank blackwater dives. Four days of seminars led by Mike Bartick.

On paper, it's simple. In reality? It was everything.

Each evening, as the sun set over Cozumel, our group would gather dockside. The ocean in front of them turned from turquoise to midnight blue. The transition was more than visual. Everyone knew what came next: a descent into a world most humans never witness.

The dives launched at 7:30 PM. By 8 PM, the divers were hovering 100+ feet below the surface in complete darkness, with nothing but their lights illuminating the void around them.

And then... the magic began.

THE CREATURES THEY FOUND

Bioluminescent jellyfish that seemed to float from another dimension. Translucent squid with colors that shifted and changed in the beam of a flashlight. Bizarre larval fish that looked more alien than real. Crustaceans that seemed designed by nature to shock and delight.

But it wasn't just about the creatures. Yes, the photos were stunning. Yes, the moments were unforgettable. But what really changed was something deeper.

One diver, a veteran with hundreds of dives logged, told us: "I came for the photography. But something happened underwater that I didn't expect. I remembered why I started diving in the first place. The wonder. The awe. It was like falling in love again."

This is what Black Water Week does. It strips away the routine. It removes the familiar. And it drops you into a world so different, so extraordinary, that you can't help but feel alive. The joy on their faces in the photos from that week—that wasn't fake. That was real transformation happening in real time.

LEAD BY MIKE

Leading the entire experience was Mike Bartick, a world-renowned underwater

photographer who has spent 15+ years pioneering blackwater diving.

Mike didn't just teach seminars and guide dives. He created an environment where transformation could happen. The focus was on connection: connection to the ocean, connection to the creatures, connection to yourself as an explorer.

One participant reflected: "Mike's passion is infectious. He doesn't just teach techniques. He teaches a way of seeing the world. And once you see it that way, you can never unsee it."

THE MAGIC OF COZUMEL

Why does Black Water Week happen in Cozumel specifically?

Cozumel has something rare: shallow-water access to deep-water environment. The channel drops from 60 feet to 3,000 feet in a matter of minutes. That proximity means you can access the blackwater environment quickly and safely.

The visibility is consistently excellent—crucial for photography and safety. And the weather is predictable, making planning easier and dives safer.

Combine those factors with the sheer biodiversity of the Caribbean, and you have a destination unlike anywhere else on Earth for blackwater diving.
