December is when Cozumel starts showing off. The dry season begins, the water turns extra clear, and the island settles into that sweet spot of warm temps and consistently great diving. It’s one of our favorite months to welcome visiting divers—whether you’re chasing long wall drifts, crisp visibility for photography, or your first winter escape to the Caribbean.
Ideal Diving Conditions in December
Water Temperature: Perfect Warmth
While much of the northern hemisphere shivers under freezing temperatures, Cozumel maintains its waters at a delightfully warm temperature. In December, water temperatures range between 78°F-82°F (26°C-28°C), slightly cooler than summer but perfectly comfortable for extended dives.
This temperature is ideal because:
✅ No thick wetsuits required – A 3mm suit is more than sufficient
✅ Allows for extended dives – At Aldora Divers, our HP steel tanks allow you to enjoy 70+ minutes per dive
✅ Maintains comfort throughout the day – Perfect for our 2 or 3-tank trips
Exceptional Visibility: Crystal Clear Waters
December marks the beginning of superior visibility season in Cozumel. As temperatures drop slightly, the cooler currents bring extraordinarily clear waters.
What can you expect?
Visibility of 80-100 feet (24-30 meters) on average
Calm waters – Ideal conditions for deep diving
Predictable currents – Spectacular but controlled drift diving
Spectacular Marine Life: Eagle Ray Season
The Spotted Eagle Ray Migration
December is one of Cozumel's best-kept secrets! This month marks the beginning of spotted eagle ray season (Aetobatus narinari), which extends through March. These majestic creatures, with their diamond-shaped bodies and distinctive spots, arrive in impressive groups.

Perfect Weather: Escape Winter
Paradise Above the Water
December in Cozumel offers the perfect balance:
🌡️ Air Temperature:
Days: 80°F-85°F (27°C-29°C)
Nights: 72°F (22°C)
Without the oppressive summer heat
☀️ Weather Conditions:
Dry season in full swing
Moderate humidity (~70%)
Abundant sunshine
Refreshing northeast breezes
🌊 Sea Conditions:
Minimal waves
Stable currents
Between November and February, Cozumel can get nortes—northern cold fronts that increase wind and surface chop. When they pass through, the harbor may close for safety and boats stay in.
Good news: nortes are normal, they don’t happen every week, and they rarely “ruin” a trip. They just mean it’s smart to plan with a little flexibility.
Although December is technically "high season," Cozumel never feels oversaturated like other Caribbean destinations. At Aldora Divers, our small group philosophy guarantees a personalized experience:
